I belong to The Reading Group at our church as this book was selected by me from the Reading List to meet the Education for Mission reading requirement.
This book is written to help Christian missionaries venturing to the Middle East where they will be working side by side with Muslims. It is so full of information regarding the Muslim culture and how traditions change from one community to another.
The author is a Christian wife married to an Arab from a conservative Muslim family. Her stories show a side that most Westerners never see. She covers topics such as status, the place of of women, the veil, segregation, and family life and some very important unwritten rules. The most important things she talks of is RESPECT, to respect others first, whether it be living side by side with others from a different culture to spreading Christ's Word. This book covers her visits to many Arab countries, but reminds us that being a Muslim is not synonomous with being an Arab.
I found this book to be very interesting and eye opening. It is a book that while written several years ago still is relevant today. With the wars and violence taking place in the Middle East, this book tells us of the human side of the people. Not everyone will like this book, it is just the author's impressions as she meets many people while traveling with her husband but it does give us a peek into a world many of us will never see.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I selected this book free from my church library.
