Lauren Vancouver is the administrator of HotRescues, a No-Kill Animal Shelter in Los Angles, California.  She is assisting the shutdown of a local puppy mill when it is learned that some adorable little beagle puppies have been stuffed down a nearby drainpipe.  It doesn't take long for Lauren to figure out who did the evil deed as she looks over and sees Efram Kiley.  He is employed by the puppy mill but also volunteers at her shelter as a condition of his plea agreement for a recent animal cruelty charge.

He later shows up at Hot Rescues threatening both Lauren and everyone, including the animals at the shelter.  She sends him away explaining he will no longer be volunteering at the shelter.  So he has not only lost his job at the puppy mill but also a contingency of plea agreement that could put him in cage all his own.  Only the consequences are much worse, as he is later found dead at the HotRescues shelter and Lauren is the prime suspect.  She may need the help of some her four legged friends to help track down the killer who might be right in their own backyard.

This author knows her stuff when it comes to pets. Linda O. Johnson is also the author of the very successful Pet-Sitter Mysteries.  This is a fine debut to her new Pet Rescue Mystery Series.  We are introduced to some wonderful characters taking on a very current issue across the entire United States.  There are so many wonderful pets that need to be rescued and find loving homes and this series will shine a bright light on this topic.  The mystery aspect adds the element needed to fictionalize this need while keeping the true message throughout the entire book. You can tell this author is very passionate about saving these animals.  A perfect book for animal and cozy mystery lovers alike.

Be sure to check Linda's Web Page  to learn all about this author and her other books.  I can't wait for the next book in this series!
